In his blog post today , Steve Pavlina mentions that he is looking for staff to help with his business.
However, he doesn’t want to hire ‘employees’. Rather he is looking for ‘slaves’ to work for him in exchange for a place to stay, food to eat, ‘learning from him’, etc. And then he goes into his usual ‘having a sexy secretary as slave, having sex with his slave, being called a master’, etc rhetoric.
Here are some other important points about how this arrangement would work out:
1. No Employee Protection Government Regulations
Steve mentions that he doesn’t want to deal with all the bureaucracy and red tape involved with hiring employees. Translation: He doesn’t want to pay any taxes that would arise from owning X number of employees, OR, he doesn’t want to deal with the goverment laws that are put in place for the protection of employees.
Here are some of the things that the law provides protection against, but which anyone working as a slave for Steve would be unprotected from:
- Wrongful job termination. (You can be fired at any time for any reason by Steve).
- Unsafe work environment / work conditions.
- Not being given proper health insurance/benefits.
- Sexual harassment.
- Racial discrimination.
- Emotional Distress.
It also means that, given the kind of unquestioning obedience he is looking from his ‘slaves’, if one of them was to get raped or harassed by Steve, she would likely have no willing witnesses to what happened.
Of course, other things like emotional distress or bullying at work would also go unpunished without the protection laws that Steve brushes aside as ‘red tape’.
2. No Personal Development for Steve Pavlina’s Slaves
Though Steve talks all the time about personal development, instilling confidence in people, not following orders like a zombie, breaking free of cultural programming, etc, its amusing to see that he is actually looking for brainless zombies to work as his slaves, who would unquestioningly obey everything he says, and have everything from their food to their clothing picked out by him.
For example, on his forums, this is what someone asked him:
“What if they don’t like the food? Or each other?”
And this is what he replied:
“Submissive and obedient slaves don’t cause problems anyway. Only an uppity slave would do that sort of thing.”
Think about it. What kind of person would willingly enter a situation where:
- They don’t get paid for their work.
- They have to call a self important git like Steve Pavlina ‘master’.
- They don’t have any protection against discrimination, sexual harrassment, medical insurance, etc.
- They have to obey everything unquestioningly, and if they don’t, they are ‘uppity’.
My guess is, only someone who has hit rock bottom in his/her life. Definitely not someone who is employed in a job. And quite possibly someone who is extremely naive, such as a 18-21 year old, and/or someone with serious self image/self esteem issues.
Rather than give these people the confidence that they need, which would be ‘personal development’, Steve wants them to be even less independent, and even more submissive, two traits which are not healthy for any adult human being.
Its also ironic that if you read his article, 10 reasons why you shouldn’t get a job, and apply each of his reasons to the working conditions of his slaves, you see that his slaves would be getting far, far worse conditions than those he mentions as reasons for not to get a traditional employment based job.
3. All signs of the beginning of a cult.
For a long time, nearly since he started his forums, Steve Pavlina and many members of his audience have been showing all signs of being part of a cult. No criticism of Steve Pavlina is allowed, and no matter what he says or does, they agree with him, and if anyone doesn’t, he/she is chastised by others.
So far, that’s been restricted to the internet. However with this arrangement, where Steve will be living with these people, they would be calling him ‘Master’, and there would be sex involved, its starting to look a lot more like a cult. Here’s what a member of his forums said:
“It does have all the hallmarks of being like a cult religion type set-up right down to the suggestion of sex as an enticement.”
Here are some other characteristics of cults apply to this arrangement, taken from this page:
- Absolute loyalty.
- Isolation from outside
- Lack of privacy
- Financial investment
- Assigned relationships
- Behavior Modification
- Peer pressure
- Conformity
- Blind acceptance
- Altered diet
What if this was a joke / April’s Fools?
This isn’t. The tone of the article is way too serious, and he has everything planned out way too seriously for it to be a joke. It was published on April’s Fools only as a backup strategy for Steve, i.e, if there are no applicants for this, or if there’s too much backlash, he can simply claim that it was all a big joke, ha ha, and the members of his online cult remain indoctrinated.
However, if he does go through with this, then everyone who objects to slavery, and/or exploiting the naivety of a socially unstable person, should boycott any of the new products Steve Pavlina releases, in whose production/sales slavery is playing any part. Moreover, if you are in the U.S or Las Vegas area, the proper authorities should be alerted if he went through with his plan.
If you are yourself considering becoming Steve Pavlina’s ’slave’, please have enough self respect to not fall for this. Not only would you be doing yourself harm by calling a man like him ‘master’, being entirely dependent on him for everything, thus losing your freedom, you would also be in a dangerous situation, especially if you are a woman.

Thanks for starting this site! This guy is becoming a little scary to me and it’s real uncomfortable to watch people uncritically accept his ideas. This new slavery thing is reprehensible. He has given new meaning to mid-life crisis. Sheesh!

Thank you….this loon has taken it entirely too far. As a free spirit/enterpreneur, a small sampling of his work appeals to me…but he has taken his own little weird twisted world so far inward that this kind of crap actually makes sense to him now. I had to laugh reading his blog, yet I guess some people actually take this sort of thing seriously??? I wonder what his ex-wife thinks about this, considering they co-parent two kids at incredibly impressionable ages. Yikes.

Savage truly is a piece of work. After some guy left a comment warning people that what Savage is suggesting sounds like a cult, Savage left a comment #210(I think) in the Help Wanted (Slavery) thread saying it was a joke and now he’s writing a blog post featuring the jokeless version of it. He even suggested the guy or anyone who has so far challenged him was jealous or repressing anger at the idea that people could possibly live in a supportive environment with others. Huh, Savage huh? I mean come on, who wouldn’t think the word, slavery might make people think of well you know slavery or a cult type situation, well, his followers apparently who disgust me with how turned on some of them seem by this shit. I mean LMAO, Wow! The slavery reference, including terms like uppity slave and slave quarters cast a shadow over his intentions. But ha ha! Jokes on us! Wow, he really plays weird mind games. And as for his girlfriend/slave friend, whatever she is: who would allow themselves to be known, ironic picture and all as a “Slave Member.” They’ve brought their bedroom to his PD site and it really(I mean, really) is unfortunate as far as I’m concerned. The poor D/S community now has to be associated with these dorks. Her Submissiveness within the contexts of these forums is just embarrassing to all women who’ve been through some rough stuff. His followers need to wake up. This sounds like a bad Reality TV show and I…can’t…stop….watching, lol! Yeah and poor kids. What an example. But he’s rich! LOL. Thanks for the place to vent.

@XS You’re welcome
.
He is wrong when he says that the reason someone would make a cult-like comparison is because of jealousy. I have no problem with someone owning a harem of consensual ‘slaves’, as long as those ‘slaves’ aren’t being exploited. The problem I have comes from a) Him trying to bypass the laws put in place for the protection of employees, and b) pretending that he cares about personal development, when his posts give the idea that he’s out to exploit the people naive enough to fall for this.
Would be interesting to see if he still tries to bypass the laws in the ‘serious’ version of this, and whether he still asks for the BS like picking the slaves’ clothes, expecting them to be obedient and submissive, etc.
Your sympathy for the D/S community on being associated with these dorks is definitely shared by me

Hi. Yes it was me that he said was jealous and had repressed anger because I questioned his ‘scheme’. Yet he criticised people for diagnosing his character over the internet who have never met him – which is exactly what he did with me. I only criticised his ‘scheme’, not him as a person.
He doesn’t seem to want an open debate about this for some reason, even though he said he was throwing this out there to gauge the response and hone his idea. I think steve is not used to people questioning him any more. He has a seriously large amount of followers, and with that comes responsibility. He does assure me that he is now writing a serious version of this post.
I am a well clinical hypnotherapist and know only too well the power of suggestion. He, I’m sure too, is always well aware. His post was littered with careful use of covert hypnosis techniques – not something I’d do for a joke. He has sowed the seeds for exactly what he wants – with the get out clause of it being a joke.
Although I’m sure he won’t physically lock people away, people will find it difficult to leave. If you haven’t been paid for 2 years, it’s unlikely you have any savings or home when you’ve had enough. Plus the emotional dependancy you will have gained from you ‘master’ being institutionalised.
Steve likened his idea to a college, except it is free, so people don’t leave with debt. I asked him whether people will be able to hold part time jobs and visit their friends and family at weekends. He so far hasn’t answered this question.
We’ll have to see what his ‘serious’ post contains, but the seeds have already been sown to a certain extent.

@Jon Rhodes, you make some great points that clearly has got Steve thinking as well as many other people (I hope) who may be considering this. He uses powerful words to get his points across, yet tries to take the power out of those words. A true manipulator!
He’s latest responses in that thread are really quite fascinating. He seems baffled at some of the criticisms he’s getting which are minuscule compared to the amount of blind support he’s receiving. The rapper, Kanye West can be an arrogant guy, which he admits to but he also can at times admit when he’s gone too far or is even wrong. I think Steve needs to take a page out of this book. He seems to be attempting to even generate sympathy for him which seems to be working. He wants to implement his unpaid staff/sex slave thing soo badly. How dare two or three people get in his way!
Steve is adept at making a person’s head spin. He even referred to other people in one of his comments on that thread as “figments”. I am not a figment, Goddammit! LOL. He takes his lens of “subjective reality” a bit too far. It doesn’t serve his purpose on his planet to believe that anyone exists outside of him. That interferes way too much with what he wants to experience in life. He admitted in that thread that he wasn’t sure he wasn’t serious or not and that he was going to make decisions based on if he gets any applications or not. But now he’s really trying to spin this as if only true slaves are the ones who would have a problem with this set-up. Making reference to actors in movies enjoying playing slave roles and Oprah who has played a slave on more than one occasion and is still successful…whaaaaat? God, his reasoning is soooo thin! I’ve said it before: I feel as though the D/S he is enjoying with his girlfriend is becoming played out in his role as a Personal Development Guru, which is confusing him. Ooops, there I go diagnosing the poor man, again.

This was an April Fools Joke. It sure made a fool out of you!

haha, so true BF. Actually Pavlina clarified about that in his next blog post.

Its funny how so many people do not have a sense of humour. Steve posted this as an april fools joke.

Steve’s blog about hiring slaves is nothing more than a sarcastic view on how he feels about having a 9-5 job with a fixed income. Anybody who’s read any of his articles like these would understand that:

or this one:http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2006/07/10-reasons-you-should-never-get-a-job/,

This is SO stupid.
I think that anyone who is smart enough, understands the meaning of “sarcasm”,and has read his past article “10 Reasons Why You Should Never Get a Job”, would know this was him reinforcing what he had previously written about.
This is his writting style to get his point(s) across. If you truely believed the whole entire thing, then I have nothing else to say but, really???
This is so DUMB.

I’m not a huge fan of the guy myself but you make everyone else who isn’t look ridiculous by being this stupid and ranking this high on Google. He posted this on April Fools Day. He left it up probably because he thought it was funny and wanted it to be available for his readers who don’t check every day. Not to mention it’s fairly long and he probably spent half his work day on it.
Now I’ll tell you, Pavlina might be crazy but he’s not mentally challenged. If he wanted to do this he wouldn’t be so up front about it. That would be like robbing a bank with a name tag on.

Looks to me as the transition to becoming Canadian: from one of his articles the three highest statuses one can achieve are game developer, BDSM’er and finally Canadian. Google for it, a pearl.

I just found your site and all of your points sounded really legit I was truly concerned but after reading the post myself it seemed impossible that steve was being serious for instance:
“This model also aligns well with my ongoing exploration of D/s. I don’t want my workers calling me Boss. That just sounds lame. I’d much rather be called Master. It’s better for my self-esteem.”
Is a personal development writer really going to right that he needs to be called master for his self esteem… common he’s clearly joking at that point
